Secret Weezer

The other day, while feeling nostalgic and working on the computer a conversation started up about how bad Vista was as an operating system. Nobody in the room had much good to say about it. Naturally the conversation went on to Windows 7 & 8. But that’s when I spoke up to say that Windows 95 was my favorite. I had some puzzled looks and everyone asked why. I told them it was purely because one of the best music videos of all time was hidden on the disk. Someone else apparently had a bunch of non-believers too, so thankfully I can share with you (their) my proof it was there… if you didn’t believe me either.

Pretty rad, right? Now you know… and knowing is half the battle. Here’s the whole video for you.

Best Christmas Songs of the 90s

Santa is double checking his list, and with that in mind here are the top 5 Holiday songs from the 1990s. Here they are in no particular order.

Hootie & The Blowfish – The Christmas Song

This is a song that I truly didn’t care for until I heard this version. Call me a Hootie Homer, but with Darius on vocals this song is just GREAT.

No Doubt – Oi To The World

I don’t know all the words, but I have fun with this song. Plus, with the Indiana Jones reference, who wouldn’t like this?

Adam Sandler – Hanukkah Song

Seriously, SO awesome and the following versions (2 and 3) weren’t all that bad either.

All 4 One – Silent Night

This is just an absolutely beautiful version of this song. Their entire holiday album is nothing but hits.

Barenaked Ladies – Christmas Melody

What a time it must have been to have lived in Canada to gather around the tv with a mug of maple syrup, wearing a hockey jersey to watch the Anne Murray Christmas Special with BNL. I think would’ve enjoyed that.

Big and Purple

A friend of mine made a statement on Facebook the other day, and my first reaction was, “THAT THING IS STILL AROUND!?” The “thing” I speak of is Barney the dinosaur. My friend who has a young one, who is just 3 years old just then discovered the big guy… 2 years after PBS stopped producing the shows. (The kids found it on Netflix… and the mother is now upset at them. lol)

Barney came to torture all parents in 1992. This singing purple dinosaur was HUGE back in the day. The merchandise was huge, the marketing was huge… everything was huge.

Real quick, can you finish this line… “I love you, you love me…”

Simba Can’t Be Happy

One of THE TV shows of the 1990s was the Tim Allen show Home Improvement. Starring Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Zachary Ty Bryan, Johnathan Taylor Thomas (JTT) and Taran Noah Smith as the lovable and relate-able Taylor family. Brad (Zachary) the oldest was the star athlete, Randy (JTT) was the middle kid who was a jokester and Mark (Taran) was, at 1st the adorable kid but as the show went on he became the dark, emo gothy kid.

In the Taylor family, only the dad (Tim) and Randy (JTT) went on to do much of anything else. Tim went on to be Buzz Lightyear, voice the Chevy commercials, and re-birth Home Improvement (only with 3 girls this time) with Last Man Standing. JTT became the heart-throb of the times. The girls swooned over him, he was Simba in Disney’s Lion King franchise. Then there was my personal favorite, his guest spot on the TV show Smallville.

The reason I’m re-living these days is to point out that the once loveable Mark, who turned into an emo-style “film maker” has fallen even deeper. THIS STORY from TMZ says Taran “was charged with DUI and possession of hash — and today, he pled “guilty” to the drug possession charge. He pled “no contest” to the DUI charge.”

I would imagine JTT (along with the whole Taylor family… and even Al) can’t be to happy how Mark has ended up.

Movie Tunes

There are some times when you’re sitting in the movie theater and the soundtrack that you’re hearing doesn’t really seem to “matter” or strike a chord with you. Everyone has their own personal tastes, and that’s fine. But there is one soundtrack from the 90’s that I blasted over and over and over again (on cassette tape), that if you don’t like it… I don’t know if we can be friends.

Obviously, this is not my copy. I’m pretty sure all my tapes are sitting in a box in my mother’s basement.

Please put aside your “hate” for Vanilla Ice, and lose yourself in the kickin’ beats. Some might say that I have “no idea what I’m talking about” or call me “crazy”, but what I do know… is just about every word to every song on this soundtrack. There aren’t a lot of soundtracks I can say that about. Let’s see, TMNT 2, West Side Story, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Team America World Police. Okay, that’s all I can come up with on a whim as I’m writing this.

The studio probably could have taken a safer route and gone with something from Kenny Loggins. (c’mon, he did just about every other soundtrack in the 80s and 90s) I’m glad they didn’t.

Blow In It

With the movie Wreck It Ralph coming out, it is definitely a way to get 30-40 somethings to take their kids to watch a movie. Why? The movie harkens back to their childhood and the then “wonderful” 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. The parents are going to see their old friends (or enemies) with Blinky, Bowser and Sonic. All while the kids will be drooling over the slick animation and 3D effects.

On a side note, am I the only person that doesn’t get the “draw” of seeing movies in 3D? That seems to have become all the rage (again) and I don’t quite get what is wrong with sitting back and getting lost in a 2D movie. Or perhaps I’m just cheap and don’t want to shell out the extra $8 (or whatever it is) for the opportunity to watch a movie in 3D.

Any way, back to the video games of our time… well… when they first started taking off. I remember getting my NES and how excited I was. (Santa did a great job that year.) Later on when Sega put out the Genesis, to rival the Super Nintendo, there seemed to be a “video game console war” going on between the two sides. I chose the Genesis and was very loyal with the brand through Sega CD, Nomad, Dreamcast and others. As I look at it now, perhaps I chose the wrong side.

Fast forward to the present the latest video game wars going on are between 2 companies who weren’t in the gaming world back then. (okay, if you still want to count Nintendo you can. But let’s be honest, they’re not going after the adult gamers, they’re still reaching out and talking to the kids.) Sony’s Playstation v. Microsoft’s Xbox. My brother loved his Playstation. I really like my PS2. Now my Xbox360 has died via the RRoD (why wasn’t that a disease to lose by on Oregon Trail?) The question is, what system do I back now???

You Were Meant For Jewel

I’ve been a fan of Jewel since she hit the airwaves back in the 90s, but this post isn’t really about Jewel… totally. The song “You Were Meant For Me” was written by Jewel and a man named Steve Poltz.

I had an opportunity to meet Steve in 2003 as he was promoting his album “Chinese Vacation”, and he had such great stories to share. While his album didn’t come out until it was too late to be included in The Radio Reboot, I would suggest you check it out. Above is a youtube of one of my favorites from “Chinese Vacation”. And below you’ll find a link to a great interview as well as acoustic performances.

Happy Halloween

Halloween, the one night a year that Leo, Raph, Mike and Don could take to the open streets without a problem. Recognize their “friend” in the pumpkin?

When I was trick-or-treating in the 90s, 3 costumes come to mind that I had. Babe Ruth, Scrooge McDuck and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Okay so Babe Ruth wasn’t exactly a 90s themed costume, but I’m a baseball fan. Anyway, if you and/or the little ones in your life are going door to door for candy, make sure you have a safe night… and watch out for robots that look like people, being controlled by a brain lookin’ thing.
